Beta-Carotene is a scavenger of free radicals, which are harmful invaders that attack our bodies on a daily basis. There are reports that say it may even prevent cancer. Beta-Carotene converts into vitamin A, whether we take it in supplement form or eat foods containing it. Although you can take too much vitamin A, there is no problem in taking large amounts of beta-carotene. Anyone with hypothyroidism should ask the advice of his or her healthcare provider.
There are many factors that can cause a deficiency including estrogen, alcohol, contraceptives, antibiotics, coffee and sulfa drugs. Supplementing beta-carotene may be necessary unless you eat animal livers, fish liver oils, and lots of fruits and vegetables.
